Food, shelter, and clothing are the core necessities of man in life and that which houses both man and two of those necessities is the shelter. Our shelter which is otherwise known as home, house, apartment or accommodation as the case may be is a place of comfort after a hard day’s job and that comfort zone should always be safe and hazard free. To make our homes highly comfortable, the other necessities of life which are food and clothing are needed in the home.
Over the years, technological and mental advancement has progressed rapidly to a stage that every hour in the least, a new discovery is made and implemented to make life easier for man. Despite the ease man aims for, these advancements which come in the form of appliances have side effects which can be adverse in some cases.
Most households contain several large appliances that are needed for day to day activities like refrigerators, ovens, washers, clothes dryers, and dishwashers. These are just a few items that fall into the large appliance category. Each appliance comes with instructions upon purchase as well as safety guidelines for reference purposes.
Appliances gather dust and large appliances gather a considerably large amount of dust over a period of time. The can eventually become safety hazards if the dust gathers excessively without being cleaned off. Large appliances are usually stationed in one place over a long period of time and should be cleaned periodically to allow them to run properly because dust can gather in the vents of machines and cause overheating which can result in burning of the cords or a fire outbreak.
The cords of electrical appliances should be checked from time to time for fraying; the cords on large appliances needs to remain intact for it to be safe; in the case of a tear on the cord of an electrical appliance, it should be replaced immediately and should be fixed properly by a licensed and experienced electrician. Never try to fix it yourself because you have a few tools in your tool shed; you would be exposing yourself to a lot of danger by doing that.
Ovens should be cleaned regularly to avoid a build-up of burnt food on the floor of the appliance and if there are children in the household, oven locks should be used to avoid the children from getting hurt when trying to open the oven door.
SMALLER APPLIANCES
Smaller appliances include microwaves, blenders, toasters, coffee makers and electric mixers; they also have safety precautions attached to them upon purchase for future reference and adherence.
As is done with large appliances and its cords, the cords of smaller appliances should be maintained and not made use of if there is a tear or fray on them. Also, always ensure not to make use of smaller electrical appliances close to a water source to prevent electric accidents.
Always take note of what kind of Tupperware or tool can or cannot be used on all appliances to prevent both hazards and damage to the appliances. For instance, check dishes to see if they are microwave safe before placing them in a microwave; also check appliances to see if they are turned off before plugging them in to make use of, appliances specially categorized here include electric mixers and blenders.
General safety measures are highly important and can never be overemphasized as one cannot be too safe when it comes to home and kitchen appliances; many of these safety precautions are fairly simple to carry out and just require periodic inspections to ensure our safety. The home is our sanctuary and so they should be kept safe at all times.
