Anticipating Mobile World Congress 2019 (MWC) - Intelligent Connectivity


The mobile industry’s largest exhibition which incorporates a thought-leadership conference featuring prominent device manufacturers, technology providers, vendors, content owners and executives representing the global mobile operators is around the corner.

The congress which is the single most important mobile technologies trade fair in the world representing the entire sector in four action-packed days. The MWC 2019 is set to take place at the Fira Gran Via in Barcelona, Spain; the host since taking over from Cannes in 2006, from the 25th through 28th of February 2019. Over 100,000 trade visitors and 2400 exhibitors are expected to be in attendance this year. Attendees represent more than 200 countries from across the globe.

While retaining the familiar acronym, placing less emphasis on “mobile” to reflect the broadening scope of communications today, the expansion of the event’s focus has been addressed to go beyond just mobile technology hence the evolution of the event’s name to MWC Barcelona.  Events in Shanghai and the Americas are also referred to as MWC Shanghai and MWC Los Angeles, and the Americas regional event is slated to remain in Los Angeles for 2020.

MWC 2019 will hold several key industry forums such as:
  • 4YFN (4 Years From Now) – the global business platform for tech start-ups, featuring workshops, discussions, conference sessions, competitions, and pre-arranged one-on-one meetings.
  • GSMA Seminars to be delivered by renowned experts, and covering essential industry developments and themes.
  • Mobile World Summit – a closed-door meeting between top executives, public policy makers, with speeches, panel discussions, and networking opportunities.

The anticipation of Keynote speakers H.E. Dr. Amani ABOU-ZEID (Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy African Union Commission, AUC), Simon Segars (CEO Arm), Chuck Robbins (Chairman & CEO Cisco), James Forese (President Citi), Hatem Dowidar (CEO Etisalat International) among others with the tight-packed themes of the MWC 2019 has technology fans buzzing with excitement.

The themes of the MWC 2019 - Connectivity, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Industry 4.0, Immersive Content, Disruptive Innovation, Digital Wellness, Digital Trust and The Future are sure to be highly educating and informative as each theme is packed with seminars, tours, track sessions, partner events, and conference keynotes.

The sessions on 5G and foldable phones are likely to cast a shadow over the MWC. As stated by Thomas Husson, Vice President, and Principal Analyst at Forrester, a global market research firm, “there is no denying that 5G is the infrastructure of the connected world, and precisely the reason why it is at the center of the economic and political war between the US and China”.

5G will create speed, flexibility, and agility to allow for far greater services and performances with higher reliability than is possible today. One of the themes of the MWC 2019 – connectivity aims to highlight the requirements needed to make 5G a reality, from implementation, to use cases, business models, spectrum and regulation, to the business and cultural challenges of working with new and diverse markets and industries.
